Why I Don’t Believe in Shooting for the Algorithm — I Shoot for Humans

ree

In the age of social media, where everyone is obsessed with “algorithm hacks,” “virality,” and “engagement rates,” it's easy to get caught up in the numbers. For many content creators and businesses, the goal is clear: create content that the algorithm will love, get tons of views, and hopefully convert that into leads or sales. But here's the thing: I don’t believe in shooting for the algorithm — I shoot for humans.
As a creative professional, I’ve learned that authentic, meaningful content that speaks to real people always outshines content created just to please an algorithm. While it’s important to understand the mechanics of social platforms, I firmly believe that when you focus on creating value and connecting with your audience, the algorithm will follow.

The Problem with Shooting for the Algorithm

Social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube are powered by algorithms that prioritize certain types of content. These algorithms often reward content that gets the most engagement — likes, shares, comments, and time spent watching. The idea is that the more engagement a post gets, the more people will see it.
The problem with shooting for the algorithm is that it can lead to content that feels inauthentic, forced, or even manipulative. Content created solely with the goal of appeasing the algorithm can often lack depth or substance. It may attract views, but it’s less likely to create long-lasting connections with your audience. When you prioritize the algorithm over real human connections, you risk losing the essence of what makes your brand or business unique.

Why Shooting for Humans is the Key to Authenticity

When I create content for my business, Studio Rida, or my fragrance brand Wicklore, I focus on creating value for real people — my audience. I don’t think about what will get me the most likes, shares, or comments. I think about what will help my audience, engage them, and give them something of substance. Whether it's educating them, entertaining them, or offering solutions to their problems, my goal is always human connection.

Here’s why shooting for humans works:

  1. Authentic Connections:

When you create content that genuinely connects with people, it’s easier to build trust. People follow you not because your content has a catchy hook, but because they resonate with your message. It’s about providing value in a way that aligns with their needs, desires, or problems.
  2. Meaningful Engagement:

When you focus on creating meaningful content, your audience engages with you in a deeper way. They may leave thoughtful comments, ask questions, or share your content because it resonated with them. This type of engagement is far more valuable than the surface-level likes that come from algorithm-driven content.
  3. Sustained Growth:

When you focus on creating for humans, the growth is often slower but steadier. Instead of relying on quick wins, you’re building a community of loyal followers who genuinely care about your work. This leads to more sustainable growth in the long run.

How to Shoot for Humans, Not the Algorithm:

So, how can you focus on humans and still get your content seen? Here are a few tips:
  1. Know Your Audience:

Understand the needs, values, and interests of your audience. Tailor your content to speak directly to them. You’re not trying to cater to everyone — just the people who resonate with your message.
  2. Create Value:

Every piece of content you create should have a purpose. Whether it’s educational, inspirational, or entertaining, your content should provide value to your audience. Ask yourself: "How will this content help my followers?"
  3. Be Authentic:

Don’t try to be someone you’re not just to gain likes. People appreciate authenticity, and they can tell when content feels forced or disingenuous. Be true to your voice, values, and mission.
  4. Focus on Quality, Not Quantity:

Instead of posting for the sake of posting, focus on creating high-quality content that reflects your brand’s personality. A single, thoughtful post can have more impact than five posts created just for the algorithm.
  5. Engage With Your Audience:

Respond to comments, ask for feedback, and engage in real conversations with your followers. This builds trust and encourages more meaningful engagement.

Conclusion:

At the end of the day, social media algorithms are just tools — they exist to help people discover content, but they shouldn’t dictate what we create. When you focus on creating content for humans, not the algorithm, you create lasting value. The algorithm will catch up with your authenticity, and you’ll find that your content performs better in ways that matter.
So next time you’re planning your content, ask yourself: "Am I shooting for the algorithm, or am I shooting for humans?"
